Shopping, Shakes & Yinz: Breaking in Pittsburgh Like a Local

Far too quickly, Pittsburgh pulled me out of my comfort zone, and I HAD to venture out to get a haircut. Ms. Mira would have to stay home for this excursion, but I was ready to explore. For a simple bob cut, Ulta is my tried and true and I found one relatively close to my new digs at The Waterfront. As I looked closer at the area, I was incredibly excited because IT…HAD…EVERYTHING. Shopping, eateries, and even a Dave & Buster’s. Just up the road my favorite strip of stores: Target, Lowe’s (what girl doesn’t need power tools?), and Michael’s (cause we also need craft supplies)!

I got to the area a little early and wandered into Barnes & Nobles. There’s nothing like the smell of books mixed with coffee. I wandered around and ended up picking up a few new books on camping and hiking in Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh specifically. I threw in a couple packs of football cards too cause I thought I deserved a treat!  I walked across the street to Ulta. Cara was great and before I knew it, I was off on another adventure!

As I walked through the shopping center, I came across a Rally House and of course I had to look for some Pittsburgh gear. I kept seeing the word, “Yinz” and finally had to pull up the google. To my insane delight, I quickly found that yinz was basically Pittsburgh’s word for y’all. As a Texan, I was sold. I bought a hat and a coaster and was on my with a new understanding of Pittsburghese. I was told that I would in fact have to turn in a Texan card though. And of course… there was yet another bridge that I had to snap a picture with. This one was the Homestead Grays Bridge. I’m in love with all of the architecture here!

I had one more stop to make, and that was the insane delights of The Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar and Ice Cream Shop. Yinz, these milkshakes were the definition of CRAZY! I got the Spilt Happens… a variation of a classic banana split, in the mason jar of course for yet another Pittsburgh keepsake, and not too long after, I left the shop overstuffed and on a sugar high.

All and all, it was a great first outing in the ‘Burgh! Join me for more adventures soon, with Mira in tow of course!
